February is Cancer Awareness Month for oesophageal cancer according to Cancer Research UK
It is also Bile duct and Gall bladder awareness month according to National Foundation for Cancer Research.
Oesophagus otherwise known as the food pipe or gullet connects the mouth to the stomach. The gall bladder are pear shaped gland that is situated on the upper right of the abdomen under the liver. Amongst its function is to store bile that break down large fat droplets to smaller fat droplets without the use of proteins called enzymes. This process is called emulsification.

World Cancer Research Fund reported:
- Oesophageal cancer is the 11th most common cancer worldwide.
- Gallbladder cancer is the 22nd most common cancer worldwide.
In the UK, Cancer Research UK reported that between 2017-2019, there was:
- 9354 cases of oesophageal cancer
- 1148 cases of gall bladder cancer.
Liver Cancer UK (2025) estimated the incidence of bile duct cancer is approximately four per 100,000 people in the UK. There are 2,200 people diagnosed annually in England alone.
