Welcome to March Cancer Awareness Month

March is Cancer Awareness Month for the cancer of the kidney, colorectal, brain, ovary and the prostate gland.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund’s 2022 statistics:

Prostate cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide where there were 1,467,854 new cases in 2022. In the UK, there were approximately 55485 cases. The prostate is a type of gland that is a structure that secretes chemicals. It produces a fluid called semen and contains the male sex cell called sperm.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide where there were 1926425 cases in 2022. In the UK, there are approximately 49249 cases where 26593 and 22836 occurred in men and women respectively. Colorectal cancers are cancers in the colon and rectum of the large intestine.

Ovarian cancer is the eighteenth most common cancer worldwide and is the eighth most common cancer in women. In 2022, there were 324603 new cases worldwide and 6390 in the UK. The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that produce the female sex cell called an egg. Several chemicals called hormones are made in the ovaries. Oestrogen and progesterone are amongst the organs that help regulate the menstrual cycle (period), female secondary characteristics, and pregnancy.


Kidney Cancer is the fourteenth most common cancer worldwide and is the tenth most common cancer in men and the thirteenth most common cancer in women. In 2022, there were 434,840 new cases worldwide and 13714 cases in the UK (8717 [men] and 4997 [women]. Similar reports by Cancer Research UK discovered 13834 cases between 2017 and 2019. Kidneys are bean-shaped organs that filter the blood and produce urine to help remove waste.


According to the World Health Organisation, brain cancer is ranked 19 and has 321,731 cases annually. Cancer Research UK reported that there were 12746 cases between the years 2017-2019. The brain is the most important organ that processes sensory information, and helps regulate the internal environment (homeostasis) and other functions. It is involved in producing voluntary and non-voluntary actions.
