Lecture Eight: Blood tests
Aim: To understand the main roles of the blood and review its composition. To determine the purpose of a blood test. To review the main investigations conducted to determine the general health of the patient. To review the specific blood tests performed per type of cancers such as enzymes and tumour markers. To understand the different types of tumour markers with given examples. To critically compare the advantages and disadvantages of the use of tumour markers. To provide insight on the ongoing development of new biomarkers in blood and urine using experimental methods: genomics (genes), proteomics (protein) and microRNA.
