Ancient Egyptian Inventions

The Ancient Egyptian civilization was symbolic for its marked innovations and creative mindsets in several fields over the span of its 3000 years of establishment, which formed a foundation for later civilizations. This can be seen in their developments in art, literature, agriculture, architecture, mathematics, science, medicine, engineering, technology, and even leisure activity.

The extent of the Egyptian legacy in art and writing is evident through their tomb paintings and hieroglyphs, one of the earliest writing systems. Hieroglyphs were carved and painted on stone monuments called obelisks and on the walls and items that accompanied them in their tombs during their unwavering preparation for the afterlife. These artistic creations captured their beliefs and contributed to their enduring legacy.

In early sections, we discussed the invention of faience, a type of ceramic made from quartz sand and other materials that produced a light blue texture. Their craftsmanship extended to pottery jewellery and cosmetic jars, reflecting the importance of self-care, beauty, and art. Other invented cosmetics included toothpaste and kohl. Egyptians also developed pens, paper, and boats from the papyrus plant, showing the versatility of their resources in daily life. They heavily depended on linen formed by flaxseeds to produce garments. It also presents the level of artistic sophistication and engineering amongst the ancient Egyptians.

Their achievements in architecture and engineering can be seen through the pyramids, which were built as monumental tombs for the pharaohs. These impressive structures showcased their wit, inspiring design, and technical mastery. In addition, Egyptians constructed intricate irrigation systems and canals to manage the yearly flooding of the Nile River, demonstrating their adaptability and planning.

Ancient Egyptians invented simple but valuable tools to advance their agriculture, such as the shaduf, which enabled them to lift water from the Nile and irrigate fields using a lever and counterweight. The sickle, with its curved blade, was used to cut and harvest grain. The ox-drawn plough, which is still used by some farmers in developing countries, highlights their ingenuity in agriculture. Another area of innovation was timekeeping, as Egyptians invented calendars and clocks relying on the sun, moon, and Nile waterfloods.

For leisure, they enjoyed the game of Senet played for over 2000 years. They threw sticks, similar to dice, to determine how many squares to move their pieces forward on the board. The popularity of such games indicates how the Ancient Egyptian unwinded in their time.
